Beddgelert station site. The concrete structure is the base of the water tower whilst on the left my father is standing in the small inspection/ash pit. The station reopened to passenger trains in 2009.

In a Beautiful Place out in the Country
In a Beautiful Place out in the Country, originally uploaded by Compound Eye - on Fall 09 Colorado Review cover.
The first time I visited this ward - NYE 2008 - I was so deeply saddened to know that high security or isolation wards for children even existed that I felt wrong even considering photographs... The fake jolity of countryside murals taunting pre-teen children with a happiness & freedom they might never know or have known made it all the worse.
This time I felt compelled to seek out and correct my actions before this entire monument to state sanctioned inhumanity to man is conveniently lost forever under the gloss & veneer of luxury apartment conversions for the mercenary, materialistic & superficial nouveux riche.
The title is a thinly veiled reference to lunacy that BoC fans might understand

The Ridges
Originally named the Athens Lunatic Asylum for the Insane, the mental hospital first opened its doors in 1874. The final patients left the Athens Center in 1993. Today the property is owned and maintained by Ohio University. Nearly all of the dozens of hospital buildings have been remodeled and put to use by the University. In 2001 renovation work was completed on the main building, which today is known as Lin Hall and houses music, geology, and biotechnology offices, as well as the Kennedy Museum of Art. Rumored to be haunted, it was featured in an episode of the Fox television show "Scariest Places on Earth." Doctors at the hospital performed lobotomies, water treatments, and shock treatments. Multiple personality and rapist, Billy Milligan (made famous in the book "The Minds of Billy Milligan") was a patient in the 70’s.

64-T
West of Clyde, Ohio on US 20. This was one of several old, abandoned houses and vehicles in a cluster on one property. The place had a strange, unsettled feeling. I passed by there another time and took some more pictures but was never too happy with any of them

Plaza Cinema - Port Talbot
It had previously closed as a cinema in 1983, and was reopened as a bingo hall. However, the bingo hall closed itself in 1985 and the cinema again reopened with the Walt Disney film 'Peter Pan' and finally closed in 1999 with the screening of another Walt Disney film, this time 'The Prince of Egypt'

The ghost station of Manchester
Manchester's forgotten railway station hides away behind the decayed and overgrown facade of this building.
This is Manchester Mayfield station that closed to passengers in the 1960's.
The overgrown platforms, buffer stops and station concourse are still to be found intact.
Mayfield station is on Fairfield street next to Manchester Piccadilly. A short viaduct diverts away from the Piccadilly station line into Mayfield.
Mayfield was built alongside Piccadilly in 1910 to handle the increased number of trains.
It was mainly used by suburban services to the south of Manchester, Buxton, Crewe and Macclesfield lines.
A number of main line services also used it during busy periods.
Mayfield suffered the effects of bombing during World War II.
The station had it's heyday for a brief period during the electrification and modernisation of Piccadilly Station in the late 1950s, many services were diverted to Mayfield whle the building work took place.
It was closed to passengers on 28 August 1960.
Since passenger closure it was converted into a parcels depot.
Mayfield had an overhead conveyor bridge which crossed to Piccadilly Station. The depot closed in 1986.
The tracks were lifted and no trains have alled at the station since then.
Piccadilly station is running to full capacity these days.
There are rumours that Mayfield could once again reopen as an overspill for trains in busy periods.
We shall see.
