In a Beautiful Place out in the Country
In a Beautiful Place out in the Country, originally uploaded by Compound Eye - on Fall 09 Colorado Review cover.
The first time I visited this ward - NYE 2008 - I was so deeply saddened to know that high security or isolation wards for children even existed that I felt wrong even considering photographs... The fake jolity of countryside murals taunting pre-teen children with a happiness & freedom they might never know or have known made it all the worse.
This time I felt compelled to seek out and correct my actions before this entire monument to state sanctioned inhumanity to man is conveniently lost forever under the gloss & veneer of luxury apartment conversions for the mercenary, materialistic & superficial nouveux riche.
The title is a thinly veiled reference to lunacy that BoC fans might understand

The Ridges
Originally named the Athens Lunatic Asylum for the Insane, the mental hospital first opened its doors in 1874. The final patients left the Athens Center in 1993. Today the property is owned and maintained by Ohio University. Nearly all of the dozens of hospital buildings have been remodeled and put to use by the University. In 2001 renovation work was completed on the main building, which today is known as Lin Hall and houses music, geology, and biotechnology offices, as well as the Kennedy Museum of Art. Rumored to be haunted, it was featured in an episode of the Fox television show "Scariest Places on Earth." Doctors at the hospital performed lobotomies, water treatments, and shock treatments. Multiple personality and rapist, Billy Milligan (made famous in the book "The Minds of Billy Milligan") was a patient in the 70’s.
